Always wanting to share with you how great the work of our volunteers has been and how far has the aid gone.

In this occasion in San Pedro of San Ramón Costa Rica is a preschool named Alfaro Preschool were only one teacher works with two groups of children. In this place there is a lot of aid needed specially on getting working material for the children and finding more people to cooperate by teaching.

INLEX Costa Rica not only helped these preschool by raising funds and with it donated working material but managed to get help by getting food for the diner.

Hello fellow volunteers,

On this week we wanted to share with you the experience of Joyce, a volunteer from INLEX Guatemala that work in several projects.

Here is her story:

“My volunteer experience in Guatemala through INLEX has been both frustrating and satisfying. The frustrations come from how few resources the people here have available to them. The satisfaction comes, however, from how good-natured and diligent they are in working to better their lives. When I was assigned to the Office of Women’s Affairs here in Santa Lucia, I began by observing various activities the local women were involved in. Because I wanted to offer more than just observations, however, I offered to teach English. Several of the women were excited about the project, in some cases more for their children than themselves. I now have a class of about ten children and four adults, all of whom are eager to learn and who make the class a joy.

A project I am enjoying even more is a search for funds to build a women’s learning center. In the activities I was observing, it became clear that the women must carry out their projects with minimal resources. To make a pastry recipe, for example, they met in a large salon with no water, no table, nothing but what they brought with them and a few benches. They put the recipe together and carried the batter down the street to a local baker who graciously offered the use of her oven. I have seen them make baskets in small office already crowded with two desks, several chairs, and various shelving. I must leave soon, but I hope to have started a process that will end with a building to house a kitchen, a daycare/education center, a classroom, and perhaps a computer room or crafts room. That would make this one of the most satisfying accomplishments I have ever experienced. I’m pleased that INLEX offered me the opportunity to be part of the growth and development of Santa Lucia.”

We love sharing with you all of these stories so you can have a more concrete idea of what is like to volunteer in some of the countries of Central America.

It’s really rewarding to know that each day there is more people interested in helping others and being part of change, as well as letting more people know how to be a part of it.

Here’s another example from our former volunteer Rory who wrote on his blog about the whole process of making the decision to leave and coming to work with Inlex/CA in Guatemala.

- Quote:

“The Decision:

Last March or April, I met a family friend Michael Dempsey who had just returned from Guatemala where he was volunteering as an English teacher. In fact he was my school principal many moons ago. Probably the most interesting cup of coffee I have ever had. He told me how EIL had set him up with Inlex a Guatemalan charity. Inlex set up volunteers in positions they are suited to and also teach them Spanish first. The more Michael told me about his experience I knew that I had to do something similar.-”

He also details who he is and the plans he made in this important part of his life, so you can follow him at:

Let’s all try to be a part of change!

We wanted to share with you that Hanna, one of our volunteers, has a blog (in german) were she writes about her experience in Centroamérica and she details how has it been living here.

On one of the paragraphs she tells us what the menu for breakfast was, in Hawaii (a neighbor town of the beach Monterrico, Guatemala)

- “After the wonderful trip of the mangroves – reserve, we ate breakfast in our Hostel ” Johnny’s Place ” for me was ” Huevos Rancheros ” (fried eggs with tomato sauce), Frijoles Negros (black beans) and Tortillas ”

This is just one of the many stories she has to tell us and she uploads pictures as well.
